Disabling Unity and enabling Unity 2D for a faster PC experience

Unity is an awesome feature enabled by default on Ubuntu 11.04 but it consumes (at least in my case) a lot of memory and makes my (old) PC really sluggish.

If you are experiencing the same issue you can use Unity 2D, a simpler version with the same features but running on QT.

To install it, open a terminal and type this:

sudo apt-get install unity-2d

After it’s installed, log out and choose your username on the login screen; at the bottom of your screen select the desktop option and click on “Ubuntu (Unity 2D). Write down your password and login.

You should be able to use a faster Unity, without notable differences from the original one.
